Earlier this month an unidentified Trump supporter posted on Claremont.org what may very well be the first intellectual defense of Donald Trump’s espoused ideology (at least to the extent it can be discerned given Mr. Trump’s tendency to frequently contradict himself).  The piece in question, entitled The Flight 93 Election, gained notoriety when talk radio host Rush Limbaugh made a great to do over it in his September 7th radio address.  Limbaug...

Now that we Millennials have officially surpassed the Baby Boomers as America’s largest generation, the internet is abuzz with predictions of how this will impact everything from marketing trends to transportation.  And, of course, how this will impact conservatism and the future of the Republican party.

While I’m generally chary to make grandiose predictions about the future, it does not currently look good for those of us who believe in the trad...

The conservative believes that there exists an ENDURING MORAL ORDER.  That order is made for man, and man is made for it: human nature is a constant, and moral truths are permanent.”  Russell Kirk – Ten Conservative Principles*

If there is one principle of primary importance to the conservative—a principle which distinguishes conservatism from most competing ideologies—it is this: the conservative believes in Natural Law, the existence of un...

Ever since Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton won their party’s presidential nominations we have been inundated with some of the most bizarre and outlandish arguments in favor of the former over the latter.  Conservatives have been asked by party officials and religious leaders to just accept that words like “conservative” or even “Christian” no longer mean what we understood them to mean in order to accommodate what could otherwise rightly be call...

“Conservatives sense that modern people are dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, able to see farther than their ancestors only because of the great stature of those who have preceded us in time.”  Russell Kirk – Ten Conservative Principles*

In our last post we discussed the belief conservatives hold that traditions should only be abolished with trepidation and much deliberation because they provide a foundation for a stable society.  In this post I’...

“The thinking conservative understands that PERMANENCE and PROGRESSION must be recognized and reconciled in a vigorous society.”  Russell Kirk – Ten Conservative Principles*

Have you ever heard it said of someone that they were on the “wrong side of history”?  Though the charge is ubiquitous in politics today it’s most often used by progressives accusing conservatives of being stuck in the past.  Obama said of Mitt Romney during the 2012 Pres...

As some of my friends are wont to do these days, I have been asked to provide my thoughts on another article written in support of Trump.  The piece in question is Donald Trump and the Pharisees written by James Riley.  Riley’s post seems specifically directed at taking to task Max Lucado’s own now famous post Decency for President.  Lucado’s post is famous because, for the first time, this renowned Christian author and pastor broke his political...

This article has been making the rounds and a friend recently asked what I thought.  The author makes some valid points and has obviously put a lot of thought into what he wants to say.  His argument at first appears persuasive because it is so long and covers so much, which is why my rebuttal is also lengthy:

“A good candidate with flaws” – Technically speaking, all good candidates are “a good candidate with flaws”.  Romney and McCain had t...

About Saving Elephants

Millennials defending and expressing conservative values.

Liberty has never been in a more precarious predicament.  As the Left sees a resurgence in socialism the Right is experiencing a rise in populism, nationalism, and authoritarianism.  Once the champions of conservative values, the Republican party is devolving into a group of self-serving career politicians with some even seeking to replace conservatism with blatant bigotry and reactionary fear.

If conservatism is to survive in the 21st century it will be up to Millennials.  How?  First by having a solid understanding of what it means to be a conservative and why that matters now more than ever.  And that's exactly what Saving Elephants is all about.  Here you will learn what values conservatives affirm and how conservatism differs from competing ideologies.  Only then will you be equipped to defend and express conservative values to a culture desperate for civil political dialogue, meaningful, vibrant communities, and purpose beyond material possessions.

It’s time the Republican party got back to its roots.  It’s time to re-ignite conservatism for Millennials!
